Jealous mare
  • I have a 7 year old mare & a 17 year old mare. Any time i try to spead time with the 17 year old. My 7 year old runs her off. I was in the feild today. I was leading my 7 year old around. She done great! I took the halter off & put it on my 17 year old and started to walk her. Got about 15 steps and my 7 year old Strarted to go nuts bucking and running around the field. well my dog got after her she kicked the dog in the face.. Her face is  swollen up . But i think she is going to be ok. But what do i do with the jealous iussue.. (Just beside my self)
  • My 5 yr. gelding that I've had since he was a yearling tries to run off the others too.  It's like he's saying "She's my butt scratcher, not yours!!!!"  Kind of scary though if the horse you are near goes over the top of you to get away.  I discipline him so that he knows I'm the boss and tell everybody when to move their feet, not him.  He's at the bottom of our herd and I think he knows he's safe when I'm near because the others can't discipline him when I'm around.  I've carried a lunge whip before and snapped it at him to make him move away.  Just make sure you watch the 7 yr. old for the first signs she's going to make a move and nip it in the bud!  Goodluck!
  • Having a whip handy is a great suggestion.

We use to help feed the horses where we use to board. There was one pasture of mares that were wild and I got kicked once, and said lots of bad words!  The kick was aimed at another horse, I was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The next time I went into that pasture I took and whip and immediately starting hitting the ground in front of me, left side, right side, back and forth. I never touched a horse with it, in fact, none of them came near me. I did this twice and they never gave me a hard time again when I came in with food.

...because they thought you were crazy!  lol  That's a good thing if it keeps you safe!  You really have to make yourself scary!  Whip in hand and use it on her if she gets too close.  Try to reassure the older one as you work and she will catch on quickly that she's not the target.  You might tie one up while you work the other if that's safer.
  • i guess from now on. I will tie the other up. when i am messing with my old mare. cause when i mess with her in the field with the other horse.. she gose nuts... Never tought horse could be jealous. Guess i learned my lesson. My dog is still doing ok. She can still eat and drink. Face is still alittle swoll
