New mare "Lady"

New mare "Lady"
  • Well, we were shocked when we saw the mare, she has obviously been losing weight, all the horses were thin except for 2 of them that were in separate pens-a mare w/ a foal and a gorgeous Iberian warmblood.  Anyways, "Lady" as she is called was fine w/ being caught, stood quietly w/ out being tied to saddle up, bridled fine and off we went out into a bumpy arena.  Her poor feet are in terrible condition but she walked and trotted along nicely.  Kelly cantered her a little bit but we didn't want to work her too much.  She has really nice bone, good conformation, needs a 100 lbs. or more on her and some care but she seems to be a really nice girl so we decided to bring her home.  The flies were horrible, it'll be so nice to put a fly mask on her tomorrow morning and give her a bath this weekend.

She has hardly lifted her head out of the manger since we fed.  She's about 16 hds, got her Jockey Club papers and according to the lady, is a Seattle Slew granddaughter, won a couple races, has had some babies that have been successful too.  Can't wait to see the butterfly emerge!

  • Very nice! Congratulations!
  • She's so pretty!  Congrats on the new addition.  I can't help but think "ouch!" when I see those withers though... [':)']
  • She is a pretty mare!
I can imagine your shock when you went to the farm to see her. I have had that happen to me. You just want to take them all home.
She'll fill out more with some groceries and she will tone up with the exercising. Her feet look good! That's nice to see for a change!
The brown fading in her black coat is a mineral deficiency, copper and zinc particularily. The coat damage from it allows for sunbleaching to happen. Free choice minerals will have her jet black and glowing again!
Congratulations! Getting a new horse makes you feel like a kid again! Enjoy!
  • Thanks, Missyclare.  Her front feet are actually pretty bad because she's worn the toes down, doesn't have much heel on one and too much on the other, a big flare on the inside of the right, a little ouchy on her left front.  Farrier coming Monday!  Can't wait to see what she's like when her feet are better.

She's got a mineral block in with her and getting MoreGlo and Strategy pellets which are complete feeds, plus all the grass hay she can eat and a little alfalfa thrown in there.  Started giving her some Cool Calories and MSM tonight too.  She just keeps eating and eating.  If it's warm this weekend, she's getting a bath.  She let me take a washcloth to her face tonight and didn't mind at all, seemed to like it, getting all that gunk out of her nose ':)'  I guess ex-race horses are pretty used to all that.
  • She's a pretty girl!  Glad she's as mannerly as she looks!!  Love her Dana!!  So glad you rescued her. [':)']
  • She got a bath yesterday and was such a "Lady."  Also wormed her, no problem at all.  Turned her out in the freshly groomed arena and she had a good roll and did play a little but she's off on her left front, hoof in terrible shape, worn down to nothing.

Looked her up and sure enough, she is Seattle Slew's granddaughter like the lady said.  She is so easy to handle, moves w/ such dignity and those eyes......  I think she's gonna be a winner ':)'
  • Dana, do you think it might help the tenderness to put an equi-boot on the sore foot?  One of the soft slip-on type?
  • I was thinking about that but was wondering what would fit because her heel on that foot is about 3' tall!  Definitely clubby on that one where the other foot has a normal heel and looks much better.  Farrier is coming tomorrow and hopefully taking some of the heel off, changing the angle and putting some sort of shoe on her will give her some relief.  I do have some bute and was thinking of giving her some.  She's not terribly lame but you can tell it is tender.

Watching her this morning, she has more spring in her step, is getting comfortable here, less initially skittish about her fly mask.  Calling the vet to come out for various things for all of the herd but a physical for her is included ':)'
  • Lady is coming along, already looking better.  She gets her teeth done tomorrow and her feet on Friday but she isn't as off in her left front anymore and tonight when they were feeling frisky when Kelly and I came back from a ride, she had herself drawn up and looked downright gorgeous ':)'
  • Lady is feeling like a new horse.  She got her teeth done yesterday, nothing too major.  The dentist said she probably had her teeth done about 2-3 years ago. She did Ok for about the first 10 minutes and then she was done!  She can sure back up quickly!
The farrier did her feet this morning and she moves better already with quite a bit of heel taken off her left front where she is a bit clubby.  He said her feet will be much better in another visit or two.  She was really well behaved for him.

Got her a pretty blue fly mask today so she won't be wearing a hand-me-down anymore.  Excited to start riding her although we need to see what we have that will work with her high withers.
  • Gosh, she's so pretty! She reminds me of a mare at my barn.
