It happened, I lost my job. Your ideas please!
  • Hi Everyone,

Well effective July 1, I lost my job.  Not performance related - just this grueling economy.  So - please congratulate me on my new direction with my life!

I have been in sales (and sales management) my entire career so I feel fortunate that my skills are transferable.  I am not limiting my options to the industry I came from and really believe if you have a passion for something and marry it with your skills, you will be successful.  For me, my biggest passion is the equine!

So, I am asking for your opinions please to help me with my job search.  Does anyone have any suggestions for companies or different fields to look at?  I thought I would take my vet to lunch and ask his opinion (...like who calls on him?  Who does he respect? etc.) as well as the owner of one of the more successful feed stores in my area.  But there is tremendous knowledge and experience within the membership of our forum, so...

Can you all help me think this through?  What would you do if you were me?

Any and all ideas would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you very much!
  • Sorry you have been caught up in this messy downward economy,  almost another
1/2 million lost their jobs in June.   You might try looking at job sites like Monster.com
etc.  and putting your resume on these sites.

maybe a sales rep  for an equine importer?  like the ones on the east coast who import
horses from europe to sell in the U.S.    Maybe apply to Country Supply to take orders
for tack shops ,  vets,  etc.      Just throwing out ideas  so if I am off base here don't laugh
    to hard.    LOL.

Hope you find something you would like to do.

  • Hmm I think you should think of this as an opportunity to do something that you are passionate about and always wanted to do.   Don't be afraid to go in a totally different direction with your life and take it as a chance to have a fresh start.
  • Thanks Second!  That is exactly what I am looking for... I appreciate it.  I will google importers.  Please keep those ideas coming.  I had not thought of Country Supply and that made me think of TSC.  I think they are considered one of the best companies to work for in the U.S.  I think I am thinking of the right company.  I will google all them too!

Broken, you are so very right and that is what I want to do - I have a couple things in the works, but not exactly what I want.   I keep dreamin...

    Yall are the best.
  • You could also contact supplement and grain companies and offer to market their products.  Look for up and coming, or stuff that is catalog and not available at the local feed store like it should be.

  • Good luck - I've been searching since December.

However, sales should be relatively easy to find a new position in.
  • Sorry to hear about losing your job........ I'm in public schools so don't know much about sales but I agree that you should do something you really like.  What do you love to do or buy and look in those areas.  In CA, it seems everyone is busy and one start-up business I thought was clever is running errands for people.  I can't remember what they call it but they go to the post office, dry cleaners, grocery store, things like that for other people who are at work.

    Goodluck!!
  • I'm sorry to hear about your job.....I've had that happen to me....so I sure can relate.
I have really just looked for anything and everything, and narrowed it down to a job that I'd really enjoy.....at least that is what I did when given an opportunity to choose between a couple of jobs.  I kept an open mind and I decided to try new things.
  • I have a friend with a web design company.  I bet she'd pay commission on any new accounts you bring her way! [':D']
ALSO, why not devote a day or two per week doing volunteer work.  It will keep you out there in circulation and you will be doing something fullfilling to all.  Sometimes that leads to paid positions!!
Any radio stations or newspapers that need sales help?
  • Yes - volunteer!  Its been a life saver for my sanity and it seems companies like to see that you have been doing something with your time while you are looking for a new job.  Plus a lot of companies like to hire people who are active in the community.
  • I was so shocked to read this. I am so Sorry!! Hugs...

I don't have any real knowledge of sales. Sorry. But I can make some suggestions. I agree that volunteering is the way to start. Many organizations hire from within so if you want to work in the equine field start volunteering. I don't know how up to a physically demanding job you are. But the Fort Sam Stables often hire new stable hands. It is physically and mentally challenging. the pay is low. And it is hard to get into. But it so rewarding. And you are working with horses everyday.

I agree that talking with vets and other horse business is the way to go. I would talk with farriers plus local feed stores. My vet was Dr. Espy 210 861 4765. He is a mobile vet and just fantastic. Huckabee was my farrier and is very popular throughout the city. Plus lives right there in Borne.

I guess I'm not much help. Just wanted you to know I'm thinking of you. When you are ready for lunch let me know. I would love to buy. And MK said she would love to come too. I say we pick a day I don't have prenatal. Then we can talk more.

    I'll be praying for you.
  • You guys are just the bestest.  I really appreciate it.

I did go into town and put my name on the list to volunteer at the Animal League.  That is where I rescued my precious Ms. Misha from and I feel indebted to them.   I think there is ...  how do you say...  a rehabilitation ranch not far from here.  What they do is use horses to help children with physical and mental disabilites.  I hadn't thought about that until now but I would LOVE that!  Thanks for the idea Hunt!

Dana I had thought about doing some substitute teaching.  What do you think of that idea?

I like the sales ideas too.  I will be at the computer today doing research and will let you know.

I am off to go see my investment guy to see about rolling over my 401K.
  • Shive and MK, lets do it!  I am going to visit my mom-in-law, but maybe week after next?
  • It should be fine for me. Just let me know when and where. I have more flexability on Wed And Thurs.
  • Hey  4my
