Patrick Swayze
• He lost his battle with pancreatic cancer today.  He was such a genuine guy and loved his horses and dogs, and nature.  So sad the world had to lose such a wonderful man.
• I was very bummed to hear this on the news.  He was more than an actor, he was an all around great guy.

Favorite Swayze Movie:
RoadHouse-----Swayze looked hot, with a good vs. bad guy theme and Sam Elliot is soooooo fine (yes he is old enough to be my dad, but when he speaks I just melt)
• Very sad...

I like that movie where he was a drag-queen.  It takes a very secure man to play that kind of role so convincingly and there are way too few men like that on earth.

• part of Dirty Dancing was filmed on Lake Lure, I got to go to the location when I first moved to NC. We were staying at a B & B on the lake and another couple who had their boat offered to show the location to us. I jumped at the chance and got to dance down the same stone steps as Jennifer Grey and saw the building where they did the final dance, and of course the spot where they practiced "the lift" in the lake. It was great, I have pictures somewhere. It was in 1990 and I was pregnant with Laurel.

There is going to be a memorial service, sure wish I could go, but I am sure it will not be the last one:

Lake Lure to Hold Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Memorial Event
in Honor of Patrick Swayze

“Dirty Dancing” Movie Setting Responds to Public Requests for Memorial

Lake Lure, NC – Sept. 19, 2009 at 7:00 PM at Firefly Cove, the setting for much of the movie “Dirty Dancing” will become the setting for a Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Memorial Event to honor the memory of one of the movie#%92s stars, Patrick Swayze.
The memorial was borne out of incoming public requests for a time to gather after the death of Patrick Swayze. The iconic movie reached classic status and became part of the fabric of Lake Lure, where a great deal of the movie was filmed and where the stars stayed during the filming. More than 20 years since its release, the movie still generates a great deal of interest from the area#%92s many visitors.
Guests to the memorial event are asked to bring flashlights to illuminate Swayze#%92s memory.
Rev. Everette Chapman of the Fairfield Mountains Chapel will speak. Chapman lived in Lake Lure during the filming of the movie, and the chapel is across the road from one of the movie sites. Also speaking will be Peggy Keys, a local who is a Pancreatic Action Network fundraiser.
Firefly Cove is now a residential development, but numerous remnants of the movie remain, including the water where “Johnny” and “Baby” practiced their now-famous lift. Parking will be assisted by local law enforcement. Firefly Cove is on 121 Chapel Point Road in Lake Lure.

Information Regarding the Original Filming Site of the Movie "Dirty Dancing"
In 1987, a little low-budget movie got the world on its feet and became a romantic classic. Though it was supposed to take place in the Catskills, the movie was filmed in Lake Lure, NC and in Virginia.

The lake and interior scenes (which account for about 90% of the filming) were shot in Lake Lure. Most of the building shots are of the Mountain Lake Hotel in Pembroke, VA. "Johnny's" cabin and the other buildings used in the movie in Lake Lure no longer exist, and were located off of Boy's Camp Road. That area has become a newly constructed development called "Firefly Cove".

"Dirty Dancing" revues were held there in the original structure until that building was destroyed by fire. Part of the rock foundation still exists and has become a private homesite. The hotel in Virginia is still open and hosts Dirty Dancing theme weekend events regularly.

Another scene from the movie was filmed on the 16th green of the Bald Mountain Golf Course located off of Bee Tree Point at Rumbling Bald Resort on Lake Lure.
