• quarterhorse105 Posted : 9/11/2009 4:36:08 PM I am going to fail my Ag economics class. My teacher has a very heavy chinese accent. I can't understand her I do have acomadations for a notetaker but nobody has e-mailed me... I had her class today and she was just so weird on how she was exsplaning things and I have homework due at 5, a multuple choise quiz, and a 600+ word summary about a article that relates to the course... I told my mom and she understands but she can't do anything... this is not high school any more... Any advice... this is more of a rant but it is to late to drop classes... so I am stuck... • TanyaC97 Posted : 9/11/2009 5:33:55 PM You need to contact someone to get the note taker there for you.  You also should get an extension on the assignment due.  If you have some sort of 504 plan then you should have someone at school who handles that and takes control over that situation.  Right now someone can get into BIG trouble for not complying. • jungle_cat Posted : 9/11/2009 9:35:11 PM I had this problem with my physics classes in college.  Both phys I and phys II were run by Indians with heavy accents.  Admin didn't care.  The way we survived was to each take the best notes we could and then consolidate on group sessions and teach ourselves.  It worked - I passed both - barely. • Summer Posted : 9/14/2009 3:32:31 AM Sounds like Jungle Cat has the best idea.  If you fail a class you will have to repeat it again and again until you do pass...  I had the same problem with Religions of the World, the instructor walked constantly...would not stand at the podium, so I could not read his lips and his accent was horrible.  I think I did get a D or a C.  I had a study buddy...she hated him too.   Other thing to remember, is try to talk to the instructor, ask questions in class if you can and be alert in class.  I have gotten a D many times just because I tried.  My chemistry instructor cut the curve right on my grade.  He gave me a D because I talked to him (he spoke English thank God) and I did my homework.  He told me as much.  My class percentage was below 60% I think, but he did the curve so I got a D.  I had no prior classes in Chemistry at all even at the high school level. • samsara Posted : 9/14/2009 2:31:16 PM Jungle_cat's advice is right on.  You just have to make the best of it.  I studied for a year in a country where the all the university classes were taught in English but very few of the instructors spoke english well and all had an accent.  Make double sure you're doing any assigned readings for this class as that can halp you on exams.  Take notes as best as you can and make a study group.  It also may help you to bring a tape recorder to class and tape her lectures.  Lots of times things don't sound clear the first time you hear them but are crystal clear the 2nd (or 3rd) time around.  Asking her lots of questions in and out of class will also help you acclimate to her accent and will make it easier to understand her.  Good luck.  LIKE Like Share You have posted to a forum that requires a moderator to approve posts before they are publicly available.
