Military trunk Circa 1944... So COOL!!
  • So ya'll have heard me blab on and on about the rescue that Gizmo is hangout at.
WELL! Since times are tough for all and they are struggling to make end meet. So, Superstb afforded to restore an old trunk that was just hanging out in the horse trailer.

We brought it home and I thought.. I'll goggle the name on the trunk...
    CMDR L.E. Gehres

CMDR L.E. Gehres was the captain of the USS Franklin during the battle of Okinawa! Circa 1944!!!

I was shocked! My father, a wood worker, is going to help us restore it without jeopardizing the integrity of the wood or ruining the letters on the trunk. It was turned into a 2 saddle tack trunk a long time ago. We're going to remove the saddle racks inside, clean it up and then auction it off to raise funds for the rescue.

Isn't that AWESOME! Now I can't guarantee that it did in fact ride on the USS Franklin.. but the only CMDR L.E. Gehres I have found via web searching is the same one that Captained the Franklin!

L.E. Gehres  is listed as one of the many who received decorations in a battle
near japan,    When the ship was almost sunk.

I think that's a good idea.  That stuff isn't worth that much unless you find some kind of collector.  We had a WWII medic blanket from a doctor's estate and I don't think it ever DID sell.  I guess it depends what part of the country.  You also run the risk of someone wanting it to use it for a tack trunk. [':)']  I think offering it to the family would be a very noble thing.  You might mention what you paid for it just so you don't lose money on it.  And, yeah, if they're excited about it they may give you a "reward"!
Maybe they need a donkey, too.
