Random but I need ideas...
  • Hey guys

I'm 17, senior of high school, freshman of college, and I am having absolutely NO luck whats so ever finding a job. It's so hard right now because of the economy, but I need one.  I have animal bills to pay, gas to put in my truck, college books & classes to worry about. [Wow, its exhausting just typing it]. I have went to local barns around me too see if they need help, and every store you could think of...nothing. :(

    Help please.
  • This will sound crazy but here's what I tell my kids.  Look around your community.  Pick either something you plan to do as a career or something you think you'd really be an asset and great contribution to, and VOLUNTEER.  Just promise them one or two days a week of FREE HELP.  Whether it's the vet's office, or a kennel, or a convelescent home, maybe even a hospital.  Let's take hospital.  It's a small world there.  If you can find a volunteer job there, filing medical records.... reading stories to kiddos....  they will get to know you, your work ethics and when something comes open you will have a much better chance.  Also, you are building working relationships and networking some.
Are there resources at your school to help you find a job?
You can put out flyers for pet sitting, dog walking, dog washing (mine need it), plant watering, tack cleaning, barn work (I'd hire you), babysitting, tutoring (young kids in reading, etc), car detailing, house cleaning, leaf raking, landscaping, flower planting, holiday decorating, concierge, older people might want to hire you to do their running around.  You could have a service to set up and decorate a tree, then take it down after Christmas.  Can you bake?  You could have a signature dessert and sell it to people for events.  You might have to go through some free samples.
If you are dedicated and will pound the pavement you could try Avon.  You have to commit to buying about $10/month but some people are hooked on certain Avon products.  How about a weekend day camp on a Saturday?  Limit the number of kids but plan activities and snacks and maybe do horse safety/ownership...
Do you belong to a church?  They might have some ideas and could probably give you references.  You could even advertise with them, maybe.
