Eros Injury
  • Eros had a very bad fall Wednesday and has possible fractured humerus. Due to swelling and a lot of muscle in the area never got a good x-ray. It happened about 1 quarter mile from the barn and it took about an hour to get him to the barn. He learned to hop and keep pressure of that leg.

He is showing signs of improvement. Swelling has gone a little and he gradually is putting more and more weight on. We were suppose to keep in tied up so he couldn't lay down, Eros being Eros, he managed to lay down anyway the 1st night. He went down 2x and got back up. We have a security camera aimed at his stall so we can keep tabs on him and reviewed the video to study how he was at getting up. He was very slow and methodical and was not thrashing around. After keeping tied up all day Thursday, reviewing the video, decided we will let he lay down. Really want to other leg to get a good break. Vet told us he will let us know what he can and cannot do. Vet comes back Monday.

He has a LONG LONG road of recovery and our hope is he comes thru this and can be ridden again. If he is only a pasture ornament, we OK with that. The other option, not so good with.

We discussed taking him to Georgia but the idea of putting him on a trailer in his condition was not what we wanted to do. In additional, we don't have that kind of money and there are no guarantees anyway. Slow steady progress is what we are hoping for.

  • Oh boy. Poor Eros. I hope he can recover.

  • I had a horse break his ankle exiting the starting gate at Santa Anita.  He won the race on a broken ankle.  We spent a fortune getting him fixed and he was in a sling with a trolley in a 24' square box for over four months.  It took a year of work just to get him so he could do all three gaits again.  Suffice it to say, he never raced again.  Thankfully the horse had an exceptionally kind temperament and made a great kid's horse.  We sold him to a youth ranch as a lesson horse.  They loved him dearly.  Kinda fits as his name was Amore Mio (my love).

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

  • Eros is making baby steps in the right direction. He has begun transitioning from hopping around to actually using the bad side. He even used that leg to first to take a step forward and ended up with his full weight on the leg.  We have a birthing stall that is huge where we will eventually move him to where he will have more room to move. We bring Fancy in at night for companionship.

  • Hoping for the best for Eros.  Sounds like one calm determined horse.
