Yikes!! Long Toe?

Yikes!! Long Toe?
  • I was so excited to be taking my prospective new horse to it's PPE yesterday. At the inspection it was revealed that he had long toe in right front leg. I asked for x-rays; and it was definatly confirmed. I have been riding the horse for afew weeks at the owners stables to see if we click and we really do! I am upset & worried because I have read all kinds of scarey stuff relating to long toe and the possibility of lameness/navicular disease/heel problems and expensive farrier visits and vet bills.
When I was riding the horse, there was a couple of occasions in the past few weeks where he seemed to 'stumble'...so I asked the vet to pay very close attention to his hooves; and I am really upset and kind of scared to buy. I really, really like this horse, but do not want or need to be stuck with massive vets bills on top of the asking price from the owner. We didn't haggle ( or haven't haggled yet).

I am waiting to hear from the farrier that has treated the horse at the stables he is at to make sure he can deal with this issue and the cost overall.

Horse is 7 year old arab gelding; and will be mainly used for pleasure ( English) riding. No jumping.

Arrrggghhh..thanks for reading, and advice from people that have experience buying horses and long toe would be really, really appreciated, I am so new at this. It's my 1st horse purchase.

    Thanks
    tmma.
  • Okay, I'm in the dark about "long toe."  Never heard of it.  What exactly is it?  Thanks.
  • I had to look it up - http://thehoofcenter.com/id6.html
It may be the farrier's fault the hoof is like that mighten it?  I didn't read all of the info on it.  Seems like it could be corrected.  You know you're looking at potential future issues but....  Wonder if there's a trimmer who's experienced.  Why not check with your farrier/trimmer/whoever's going to be doing the horse.  We have some hoof folks who used to be on here but they migrated during the big exodus.  There are a lot of people who know a lot of stuff so... be patient.  Someone's bound to have experience with this.
You're doing the right thing by thinking it out carefully.  (and you MIGHT want to pop over a log on the trail occasionally!!) ':)'
  • Thanks so much for replying.
It's been decided ( upon futher discussion with my vet) that this case of long toe is NOT advanced at all, and remedial action will greatly solve the problem. I am lucky in the fact that this vet is a hoofey person and is willing to do the trims to get this started on the right track. I think that's a good way to go. He has the X-Rays and all.
My vet assured me that this case is NOT advanced and the horse is sound. &nbsp';P'hew.
    I'll keep you all updated.

I'm still so excited about this horse.

    Happy belated Thanksgiving to everyone!

  • Thanks for the update!  Don't be a stranger!  We will need a whole thread in General section about your new horse including pictures.  And if you have videos, post those! [':)']
