ticks in horses ears
  • my 3 y/o mustang has a problem with getting ticks in her ears and i have used a home remedy on her and it hasn't worked . i have put calm coat on and in her ears but she still seems to get ticks. does any one have any hints as to what i can use in order to help her out, plus her momma who rarely ever has ticks on or in her ears. my yearling is already ear shy because i have had to do this three times now and shes itching her ear like crazy. i love my horse to death and it hurts me to see her in this much pain.
  • My horse is a Tick Magnet as well, so am I. Between the two of us, we get all the ticks so no other person or horse has to worry about them.

I have not had problems with the ears, but she gets them every where else including her girly parts. I have had very bad gnat problems in her ears and I use SWAT in her ears. She did not care for this in the beginning but as time has passed she seems to enjoy it as I massage it in.

There is a lot of debate about garlic. I have noticed no difference with it in regards to flies and gnats, but since she has been on garlic this year her tick problem has been reduce significantly, and I know they are still out there!

  • Hi, so sorry to hear about the problem you're having with flies.  This is a problem world over, be it UK or USA flies!

I'm afraid i don't agree 100% with some people's views on horse fly sheets and fly masks.  My view is that if a horse is measured properly and the correct horse fly rug fitted, then rugs do make a big difference.  A rogue fly may get in but you'll stop the main problem!

I believe that prevention is better than cure!   There are remedies to help horses bitten by flies or that have sweet itch, but fly rugs combined with other steps will make such a difference.

Do think about moving your horse to a part of the field less troubled by flies or perhaps even moving the horse back to its stable during those hours of the day when flies are at their worst.  In addition you can think about adding garlic or brewer's yeast to your horses' food.  This doesn't harm the horse but makes their blood pretty horrible to the flies' taste!  All these steps plus fly repellent can make all the difference.

There's plenty of info on fly rugs and repellents on the blog http://horserugs.me.uk/ - and there's no adverts!

    Good luck!
  • i was actually talking about ticks and i have moved them to there main pasture but i have to move them again in a lil whlie and i dont really worry about the flys as much as i do the ticks. i no there a problem all over the place but the ticks is the main problem . and there pasture is fairly small as it is so im just haveing the one problem.
