Diarrhea!!!
  • Max is 8 years old and has had diarrhea off and on for about 2 months now. Lately its been more on than off. His manure for the most part looks normal but there will be a pile or two that looks like a cow patty. Also, he is a paint and is mostly white and every day for about the past 2 weeks I've had to scrub his behind to get the stains off his butt and legs. He is out on pasture with about 8 other horses every other day and is stalled at night, he eats 2 times a day (morning and night), there have been no changes to his diet, he's been on the same food for about 2 years. He's also on a regular worming schedule. I'm at a loss! I just gave him a 5 day wormer power pack and hope that it will help the cause, today was the 5th and last day of that. For supplements he gets flax seed, electrolytes and biotin in powdered form. Someone at the barn recommended UGuard so I'm probably going to give that a try next. Does anyone have any other suggestions?
  • UGuard is the direction I was going to take.  Ulcers develop so easily in horses, partly because of how their stomach is designed, partly because of the way they stress out.  I was going to ask if there was any change in the herd dynamics there where he is.  It's not a new place, right?  Have there been some additons/subtractions from "the herd"?  Have you trailered off for a few days to do stuff with Max?  Ulcers are easier to prevent than to cure and it's hard to know unless he's scoped.  2 months seems like a long time.  It's encouraging that he has some "normal" ones periodically.  Sounds like you do take good care of him!  Probiotics might help.  Maybe something has killed off the friendly bacteria in his system.  Has he done antibiotics recently?  I hope you figure it out soon!  Poor Max!
  • I very much appreciate your reply. I actually just ordered UGuard this evening and it should be here tomorrow. The 5 day wormer did not work unfortunately. I'm hopint UGuard does work. If not, I'll pretty much be out of options other than getting the vet out for some blood testing, etc. I'm trying to avoid that but if it comes to it then that's the way I'll go. Again, I appreciate your response.
  • The people who make Ulcerguard have a great web site with info on the subject.   Hugs to your horse.
