Looking at Stallions for 2011
  • Okay, so I am looking at stallions to breed my horse to next year and I have a couple picked out, but I wanted to get some opinions on this one.  I am not too sure how I feel about his Conformation, but some of his babies are gorgeous and I love the color possibilities that I would have if I bred my mare to him.
here is the website of the stallion

and here are his foals that I am in love with, and I think they are the only two that are under saddle at the moment

And here are some pictures of my mare

  • Can't tell a whole lot about his conformation from the pictures but he does look pretty AND the thing that strikes me is, he must have a really good, kind mind because he's turned out with his mare and foal and doing fine ':)'  He looks to be performance bred rather than halter which is good in my opinion ':)'
  • Since your mares heavy in the front end more up hill a tad I would look for a stud to counter react that.  I don't see any bad flaws on the studs confo but there not really showing confo pics so its hard to tell.

  • What do you want the foal to do?  That is the best question to ask when choosing a stallion.  If you want a western pleasure foal, I think the stallion you linked to would probably be okay even though the photos of him make it hard to tell what his flaws might be.

If you'd rather have a performance horse or hunter under saddle type foal, I think I would recommend that you keep looking at other stallions.

If you know what color you want, ALWAYS better to buy than breed.  Same for pattern, I'm not a fan of the almost all white tobiano pattern that you frequently see so if I was going to keep the foal I might consider choosing a loud overo foal instead of breeding to a Tobiano stallion.  Of all the possible foal outcomes, consider the one you like the LEAST.  If that is what you end up with, will it be one you want to keep or sell?

Good luck for a healthy and safe foaling!
